How to Get a D-U-N-S Number for Apple Developer (and What It Verifies)

A D-U-N-S Number is a 9-digit business identifier issued by Dun and Bradstreet. Apple Developer requires one for any business enrollment. Anvil Road LLC's D-U-N-S is 144998774. Here is how to get yours, what it actually verifies, and the address mistake that costs most founders a week.

What a D-U-N-S Number is

Dun and Bradstreet's universal company identifier. Banks, suppliers, and government contractors use it to verify that a business exists.

Apple uses it because it lets them confirm your LLC is real without having to call your state's Secretary of State office. The D-U-N-S record carries: legal entity name, business address, year established, and a few credit-related fields.

How to get one

Free. Go to dnb.com and request a D-U-N-S Number through the Mini Inquiry process. Submit your legal entity name, business address, and contact info.

Verification takes 1 to 5 business days. Dun and Bradstreet's team confirms the business exists, sometimes by checking state filing databases, sometimes by calling.

Once approved, your D-U-N-S Number is searchable through Apple's D-U-N-S lookup tool at developer.apple.com.

What you submit

Legal entity name. Must match exactly what your state has on file. Anvil Road LLC not AnvilRoad LLC or Anvil Road L.L.C. Punctuation matters.

Business address. Use your virtual address from the LLC formation if you have one. Use a real street address either way. Apartment numbers and PO boxes can trigger manual review.

Year established. The year your LLC was filed with the state. Not the year you started the project. Not last year if you filed this year.

Phone number. Has to be answered by someone who can confirm the business when D and B calls. A Google Voice number works. A cell phone you actually answer works.

What it actually verifies

Your business name matches state records.

Your address matches a real location.

Your business is contactable through the phone number you provided.

That is the whole bar. It does not verify revenue. It does not verify credit. It does not verify that you have employees. Apple uses D-U-N-S as a sanity check on basic business existence.

The address mistake

Most founders apply for the D-U-N-S with their home address, then switch to a virtual address later when they form the LLC properly. The D-U-N-S record now has the home address, but Apple Developer's form has the virtual address. They do not match.

Apple's automated check fails on the address mismatch. A human reviewer emails. You update the D-U-N-S, wait another 1 to 5 business days for verification, resubmit Apple Developer. A week gone.

Fix this by deciding your business address before you request the D-U-N-S. If you are getting a virtual address through Northwest or similar, finish that step first, then request the D-U-N-S with the virtual address from day one.

How long the D-U-N-S step actually takes

Best case: D and B verifies in 24 hours. Most people see 2 to 3 business days. Worst case, 5 business days.

If you submit on a Monday morning, expect verification by end of week. If you submit on a Friday afternoon, expect verification by Wednesday.

Once you have it

Go to developer.apple.com and start the Apple Developer Program enrollment for an Organization. Choose Company or Organization as the entity type.

Use Apple's D-U-N-S lookup tool. Enter your number. Apple should return your LLC name and address. If it does not, your D-U-N-S record has a problem.

Submit the enrollment. Apple's review runs 24 hours to 3 weeks depending on what their team needs to verify.

D-U-N-S for things besides Apple

Bank loans. Many business banks pull D-U-N-S credit reports during underwriting. Yours starts at zero.

Net 30 vendor accounts. Office suppliers, software vendors, and some hosting providers offer net-30 billing for businesses with established D-U-N-S records.

Federal contracting. Required if you ever bid on a federal contract, though the new UEI system has reduced D-U-N-S dependence here.

For most app and digital publishing founders, Apple Developer is the only place you will ever use it. That alone makes it worth the 5 minutes to request.
