Google Workspace vs Cloudflare Email Routing for a New Business

Google Workspace costs 7 dollars a month. Cloudflare email routing is free. For a new LLC, the answer depends on whether you need to send mail from your domain or just receive it.

Short answer

Google Workspace if you need to send mail FROM your domain. Cloudflare email routing if you only need to receive.

Apple Developer, banks, and most business services check both directions. They send you an email and expect a reply that originates at your domain. Cloudflare routing forwards inbound mail to your existing Gmail, but a reply from that Gmail goes out as @gmail.com, not @yourdomain.com.

That mismatch is the single most common reason new founders end up paying for Workspace.

What Cloudflare email routing does

Free, included with any domain you have on Cloudflare DNS. You set rules like 'mail to anything at anvilroad dot com goes to anthony at gmail dot com.' You can have 200 inbound aliases.

What it does not do: send mail. There is no SMTP. There is no way to compose a new message with anthony at anvilroad dot com in the From line.

For a side project or a brand-new domain you are not using publicly yet, this is fine. You can read mail. You can reply through your normal Gmail, accepting that the reply goes out as your Gmail address.

What Google Workspace adds

Real Gmail at your domain. Real Google Calendar at your domain. Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Meet. All of it tied to anthony at anvilroad dot com instead of anthony at gmail dot com.

Cost: 7 dollars a month per user, Business Starter tier. Cheaper than most other professional email providers. Easier to set up than self-hosted alternatives.

The big difference: you can SEND mail from anthony at anvilroad dot com. Replies look professional. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are automatic. Deliverability is high.

When the 7 dollars matters

Apple Developer enrollment. Apple emails the address you provide. You will reply at least 2 to 3 times during the verification. Replies from a Gmail with a Cloudflare forward look unprofessional. Sometimes they get flagged for manual review.

Bank account opening. Most online business banks email you for follow-up. A reply from gmail.com when the account is in Anvil Road LLC's name confuses the underwriting team.

Customer email. The moment you publish your app or website, real users will email you. A reply with your Gmail signature undermines the brand.

When free routing is enough

You are testing a domain. Not ready to commit to publishing. Just want to grab the domain and forward inbound mail to your existing inbox.

You are the only person using the email. No team. No support address. No need to look professional. Side project register-and-forget.

You already have a Workspace account on another domain. You can use Cloudflare routing on this new domain to forward into that existing Workspace, then send through the existing Workspace identity. This is a workaround for second-domain founders.

What I did

Started with Cloudflare routing on anvilroad.com the day I bought the domain. Free, took 10 minutes.

Switched to Google Workspace the same week, because Apple Developer enrollment was on deck and I wanted real From addresses for the verification emails.

Then I discovered the previous owner of anvilroad.com had a Google Workspace account I had to clear before I could create mine. That added 24 hours.

How to do it cleanly today

Buy the domain. Add it to Cloudflare DNS.

If you are publishing publicly within 30 days, go straight to Google Workspace. Skip the Cloudflare routing step.

If you are still in test mode, start with Cloudflare routing. Switch to Workspace before any business service asks you to verify your email.

Pay the 7 dollars. It is the smallest line item in any LLC's first-year budget.
